His story was a little bit cheesy but, he did so good reading out loud, on stage, into a microphone, and in front of all those people (see him in the video). He said he was a little nervous but, you couldn't tell one bit at all. I wish I could talk in front of people half as well as he did!
Mostly just picture posts for the unforeseeable future. Blah but it'll have to do. Sorry, Texas.

BROOKE'S KINDERGARTEN GRADUATION
It's unbelievable that this day actually came. My last baby graduated from kindergarten and is moving on up in the world. This year flew by so much faster than I anticipated, and now Brooke will be in a grade with an actual number in front of it instead of a letter (you know, like a 1 and not a K...just to clarify).
Brooke's teacher has been so sweet and patient with her this year. She said she has really seen Brooke mature so much throughout the year.

Brooke thought it was so cool to get to leave school so early without her brother so, Nathan and I took her to Chick-fil-a for breakfast. He went back to work while we finished getting stuff for the teacher gifts. And, of course, I made her take more pictures. She just looked so darn pretty!

Brooke, Mommy is soooooooo proud of you!!! I can't wait to see how much you learn in the first grade!

Brooke, Daddy is soooooooo proud of you!!! His little princess really is growing up!
Nathan brought Brooke home some flowers for her graduation, and it was just too stinking sweet.

She said she wanted them in her room and picked the perfect spot on her shelf...Awww.

5/15/10-GAME 9
*Yes, I know I'm nearly 2 months off...oh well :)
Again with the phone calls...Just one day after Nathan got the phone call about his cancer and the need for more surgery, he got another phone call asking him to pitch in Cole's baseball game. He didn't even hesitate for a second and agreed to do it.
What?! Dude, you just had major surgery less than 2 weeks ago! He knew it would be hard on him but, he also knew that it might very well be his last chance to help with Cole's baseball team before the end of the season.
He had to do batting practice for an hour before the game...in the blazing sun...to allow the kids to get accustomed to his pitching. That wasn't a good idea AT ALL. It was easy for me to see that he was exhausted when Brooke and I got there shortly before the game started. He was overheated, light headed, and sick to his stomach but, did that stop him from pitching the entire game? Of course not. He actually pitched so well that nobody realized how awful he felt the entire time.
I don't remember the final score but, our kids did really well and completely blew out the other team. The head coach's wife suggested that Nathan pitch more often...Little did she know that his world had just been turned upside down. At least the game was a brief distraction from it all.
Cole got to play third base for part of the game and shockingly did really well.
Even though Cole never said anything, I think he was really proud to have his daddy out there...As he should be!

THE PHONE CALL
*I'm well aware that most everyone that reads this blog already knows what has happened by learning it through family or Facebook since I'm a good month behind on postings but, I wanted to continue saving a record of events anyway.
Remember how I mentioned that we had to wait even longer to get Nathan's test results because they had to be sent off for further testing? Well, the kids had lots of things going on that pretty much kept our minds off of it for a couple of days. That was good. And, of course, those things have yet to be put on the blog, but one day I'll catch up...Maybe.
On Thursday, May 13th around 4:00 pm, I was sitting on the couch cracking up and texting away with a friend when Nathan's phone rings. He said, "It's the doctor" and quickly went back to another room.
Deep down, I already knew what the doctor was going to say. I just really wanted to be wrong. I kept texting, but Nathan was on the phone longer than expected so, I tried to listen a little bit at the door. I couldn't make out much, but I could tell by his responses that it probably wasn't good. I immediately texted to my friend that I thought he just gotten bad news from the doctor.
I was right.
It was one of those phone calls that you never want to get in life. A phone call that confirms that you or your spouse does officially have cancer. CANCER! How is this even possibly happening to our family when we're only 30 years old and still have relatively young children?
I walked into the room when the phone call ended and he instantly broke down. The word cancer being associated with your body is horrendous enough and hard to take in, but he was almost more upset about having to go through more surgery. He just really, really, really didn't want to...And understandably so.
Nathan wanted to go ahead and tell the kids instead of keeping the truth of what was really going on from them. I was fine with that except that he hadn't really had time to process it all and get his thoughts together. And I was about to take them to Cole's baseball practice.
We sat the kids down to tell them the news of the cancer and the plan for more surgery. It was awful. Just awful. Cole freaked out when Nathan said that he had cancer and just started crying immediately. That made Nathan start to lose it, but the noise he made when he was breaking down sounded a little like he was laughing so, Brooke started giggling and told him that it wasn't funny that Cole was crying. I had to tell Brooke that daddy wasn't laughing and try to get her to focus on the seriousness of the situation. She never understood what was going on and what we were all talking about but, she did try to squeeze out some fake tears after a while.
My emotions were all over the place. I was trying to be strong for Nathan because both of us didn't need to cry in front of the kids. I was also trying to sound very positive while explaining things in kid terms so that Cole wouldn't be so scared and upset. But, at the same time, I was so aggravated with Brooke for acting silly during all of it.
And just like that, we had to totally switch gears and head off to baseball practice. Nathan stayed home to make a couple of phone calls and take some time for himself. My mind was going a million miles a minute during the short drive there, but the kids seemed to have forgotten about it. Cole ran on the field and was in total baseball mode, and Brooke started running around all of the trees just like she usually does. One of the coaches said hi to Brooke and asked her how she was doing and she shockingly told him that her dad was going to have more surgery. And then she continued running around. They were way far off so I had no clue that she told him until he came up to me and asked me what was going on. We never told anyone before the first surgery, but he was the one of the few on the team to know about it afterwards. I gave him all the details, he offered to help in any way, and then just as he was leaving, he yelled out that one of the dads out there was a cancer doctor.
That was slightly awkward but, I went and talked to the guy anyway. He's an oncologist. I don't think he quite liked talking about work stuff outside of work but, he did give me some good information. He was also very familiar with Nathan's doctor and his work. One of the moms overheard us talking and came up to me after practice and offered to help. Even though we've lived here for a year now, we really don't know anybody that well so, it was really nice to suddenly have people that I could actually feel comfortable with asking for help.
Nathan and I met with his doctor early the next morning to go over the details of what was to happen next. The papillary cancer that was found was a fairly large amount, and the only option was to have more surgery to remove the remaining half of the thyroid. And because of this, Nathan will be required to take a pill for the rest of his life to replace what his body will be without post surgery. Trying to figure out the right dosage that his body needs will be the hardest part because it could take a long time.
So much for the incision healing up because it has to be completely sliced open again for a do-over.
Life throws curve balls at you doesn't it? You just never know if that next phone call is going to drastically change your life...Good or bad.

FIELD DAY
Don't you just love Field Day? I remember it being so much fun and so cool to try and win first place in every event. Cole's field day ended up being pretty lame because it was rainy and really chilly outside, and everything had to be held in the stanky, old gym.
We didn't stay that long because it was a week after Nathan's surgery, and he wasn't really up for standing in a loud, echoing, musty gym full of screaming kids. Cole was all about hanging with his friends anyway. He's such a social kid and has no problem feeling comfortable or fitting in pretty much anywhere...A quality that he did NOT get from me.

Brooke's field day was two days later and the weather had completely flopped. It felt like we were in Texas again. It was hot and sunny and the outdoor events actually got to be held outside. Much better for a bunch of screaming kindergartners. I was so worried about Brooke being shy and uncomfortable out there...A quality that she unfortunately DID get from me.
This was also Nathan's first day back at work, due to pressure from his boss even though it was against his doctor's advice, but he still managed to stop by two separate times to see his little girl at her first field day.
It was unbelievable how cute she was out there. And it was just so sweet to hear all of her little class mates cheering her on. She did great out there and had such a good time.

1 WEEK POST-OP
At first, I was taking a picture of the incision every day to capture the healing process, but then I started to forget or by the time I remembered he would have already put medicine on it making it look too shiny. Every morning it would look a little bit better, and each day he felt up to doing more.
I originally planned on documenting in detail how Nathan felt each day, but so many things were going on with the kids between the end of school stuff and baseball and me trying to do most everything by myself that the blog stuff had to get put on the back burner. And since I'm posting this a month after the fact, the details are foggy for Nathan so, pictures will just have to be enough.

We were also supposed to get the test results back from the surgery to rule out cancer, but Nathan got a phone call the Friday before saying that they weren't back yet. The nurse said that his samples had to be sent off to the Mayo Clinic for further testing, and it would take a few more days. She said that it didn't mean anything was bad, but how could needing further testing mean anything good? So, once again, the waiting continued.

1 day after surgery
Ditch the stitch
Nathan got his stitches removed 8 days after surgery. The doctor said it was one long, continuous stitch, but I counted that it wrapped around 14 times. Whatever. It was pretty uncomfortable for him, but I know he was relieved to get them out.
